Our Smile is Best Feature!

It's not surprising to learn that the feature we find most attractive in others is: The Smile!
"The smile outranked the eyes, hair and body as the most attractive physical feature," according to a study conducted by the American Dental Association(ADA)and two toothpaste companies.

Yet, when it comes to taking care of teeth and gums, there is a gender divide. The national survey of 1,000 Americans over 18 found that 86 percent of women brush at least two times a day, compared with only 66 percent of men.

The survey also found that women change their toothbrush or power toothbrush head every three-to-four months, yet men hang on to theirs for about five months.

The ADA recommends that we replace toothbrushes every three to four months, or, when the bristles appear to be frayed or tilted. The reason is that worn or tilted bristles are less effective in cleaning teeth.

All Americans fall woefully short when it comes to flossing their teeth, the study says. Less than half, 49 percent, reported flossing their teeth at least once a day. And one out of three people stated that they think a little blood in the sink after brushing is normal. Yet, this condition likely signals gum disease or another health problem.

"More and more, our expanding knowledge about the link between oral health and overall body health highlights the importance of flossing, brushing and regular dental check-ups," says Dr. Daniel Deutsch, at the Washington Center for Dentistry, in Washington, DC. "Not only are we aware of a link between oral health and cardiovascular disease and diabetes, but some diseases or medical conditions, such as oral cancer, have symptoms that can appear in the mouth."

And the attention does not stop there. A full-page article in the "Best Dentist" issue also highlights Drs. Deutsch and Doctors as the official dentists for the Washington Wizards Basketball Team! The article, titled "The Hard-Knock Life," interviews Deutsch and Doctors about protecting the smiles of professional athletes while they play sports.

The doctors said all professional teams have dentists dedicated to the players. "These players are worth millions of dollars," says Dr. Deutsch. "The team owners want them in perfect shape. They get hit in the mouth, their teeth are loosened or knocked out. They're big men who collide..."

And the players come to our office for routine dental needs, too. "We do their regular care as well," says Dr. Doctors. "We find a lot of the younger players haven't had regular care."

The Who, What, Where About Dental Floss

Did you know the first dental floss was invented in the 19th century by an American dentist named Levi Spear Parmly. His 1819 book about dental care described a waxed silken thread that we now call dental floss.
As a result, his patients soon began using the thin silken strands to clean between their teeth. It's no wonder Parmly now is considered a pioneer in dental hygiene because of his writings about tooth care.
Benefits of Floss:
Dental floss plays a pivotal role in helping to chase away some of the oral bacteria that causes decay. It achieves a critical cleaning between the teeth that removes plaque and food particles that a toothbrush cannot reach.
Types of Floss
The first dental floss was made of silk thread. To improve the product, later versions have been made of nylon and Gore-Tex. There are different textures, such as soft floss, spongy floss, or floss with stiffened ends.
Benefits of Floss
The American Dental Association recommends daily flossing as an important factor in maintaining good oral hygiene. The other recommendations include, brushing teeth twice a day, eating a balanced diet, and visiting the dentist for cleaning and exams on a regular basis.
Dr. William Mayo from the world-famous Mayo Clinic, states that "daily plaque control can add ten years to your life." In spite of the evidence, only about 15 percent of people floss on a regular basis.

People buy more than three million miles of dental floss in the United States each year.
- Year commercial floss was first manufactured: 1882.
- Amount bought per person: 18 yards.
- Amount that should be bought per person: 122 yards (figuring one foot per day).
- People who say they floss daily: 28 percent.
- In 1994, a prison inmate in West Virginia braided floss into a rope and scaled the
wall and escaped.

Welcome to 2011! A new year for knock-your-socks-off success in taking care of our mouths. This level of care is important because it does more than ensure a bright, white smile.

Research now shows a healthy mouth and healthy body go hand in hand. It's a new world when it comes to good oral hygiene and good oral health. We benefit because this double-barrel effort can improve overall health--reducing the risk of serious disease and perhaps even preserving memory in later years. The phrase "healthy mouth, healthy you" really is true--and backed by growing scientific evidence.

The Magic Six:
1. It's never too early to start teaching your children to take care of teeth and gums. Healthy habits learned in childhood can pay off in adulthood. And, if you're tempted to shrug off brushing, flossing and seeing your dentist regularly, remember you're a role model for your kids.

2. Decayed teeth and gum disease are often associated not only with an unsightly mouth but unpleasant bad breath--so bad it can affect confidence, self-image and self-esteem. With a healthy mouth free of gum disease and cavities, quality of life also is bound to be better as we eat properly, sleep better, and concentrate with no distractions from aching teeth.

3. Chronic inflammation from gum disease has been associated with development of cardiovascular problems such as heart disease, blocked blood vessels and strokes.

4. Findings of studies suggest that maintaining oral health can help protect overall health, such as when adults with gingivitis (swollen, bleeding gums) performed worse on tests of memory and other cognitive skills than those with healthier gums.

5. Poor oral health has been linked with the development of infection in other parts of the body. In one study, poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease was associated with the development of pneumonia on older people. Bacteria in the mouth can travel into the lungs, causing infection or make lung conditions worse.

6. Other research has found an association between gum disease and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the joints.

Eating a balanced diet, seeing your dentist regularly, and good oral hygiene helps reduce risks of tooth decay and gum disease. Make sure you brush twice a day and floss once a day.

It's official! Our Dr. Daniel Deutsch--founding partner of the Washington Center for Dentistry--has been named the "team dentist" for the Washington Wizards Basketball Team!

"I am honored to be chosen for this position, and I look forward to helping our city's NBA team keep their teeth healthy and their smiles looking great," says Dr. Deutsch, who has been an avid Wizards fan for many years.

Last Friday, Dr. Deutsch visited the Verizon Center, where he observed a team practice session and met with team head trainer, Eric Waters and Wizards General Manager, Ernie Grunfeld.

After a tour of the team facility, Dr. Deutsch will be making sure dental materials
will be well stocked for the coming season.

Gum Chewers Have Reason to Rejoice!

In the 1980s, artificial sweeteners in blue and pink packets, diet soda and sugar-free gum set the standard as "healthy" alternatives to their sugar-laden counterparts. Today, there's another sweetener called xylitol touting sweet-as-sugar taste that is low in calories. And, you'll be happy to know, studies show it may help reduce and prevent cavities.

A natural sweetener found in plants and fruits, xylitol was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1986 as a food additive. But, now it is appearing in sugar-free gum, mints and toothpaste.

Research confirms that of all factors studied, xylitol most likely inhibits the growth of Streptococcus mutans, the oral bacteria that causes cavities, according to a study in the General Dentistry, the clinical, peer-reviewed publication of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).

Here are three tips for a sugar-free mouth:
1. Keep a toothbrush and toothpaste handy; children can keep travel-size products in lockers or backpacks, and adults should keep a spare pair at work.
2. Chew sugarless gum, with or without xylitol, after meals or snacks when unable to brush.
3. Drink water throughout the day to help cleanse teeth of excess bacteria.

Men: Want Success at Work? Start by Seeing the Dentist

That old perception about men not going to the dentist is true, according to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and its online poll that queried 289 general dentists and consumers.
Nearly half felt that men don't see a need to go to the dentist and about a third reported that men may not visit the dentist because they are afraid or embarrassed to go. Almost 18 percent noted that men just don't have the time for a dental visit, and about five percent felt that men don't even have a regular dentist.
While the AGD now reports this long-held trend is changing for the better, we are happy to report that men coming to our office already buck the trend.
"I would say at least half of my smile makeovers are for men," says Dr. Peter Rinaldi, a cosmetic specialist at Washington Center for Dentistry. "Male patients I see are high up on the career ladder or young men on their way up. They make sure they have the total package of grooming, fitness and a good, strong smile to complete the picture."
Dr. Rinaldi notes that men also do a lot of research about oral health and appearance-related dentistry.
"They are ready to whiten and get veneers to improve the shape, color and alignment of their teeth," says Dr. Rinaldi."And they leave our office looking a lot better."

"When Do I Replace My Toothbrush?"

Now that we all are firmly committed to a new year dedicated to health, it seems appropriate to review the basics in oral care. And the question about how often to replace our toothbrush is definitely a #1 query among our patients.
The answer: Replace your toothbrush every three months or after you've been sick.

Here are other important tips:
* Floss daily
* Brush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day (Fluoride can reduce tooth decay by as much as 40 percent.)
* Visit your dentist at least twice a year for routine hygiene check-ups and cleanings.
* Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to reach every surface of each tooth.
* If bristles on your toothbrush are bent or frayed, buy a new one.
* Brush properly - To clean the outside surfaces of your teeth, position the brush at a 45-degree angle where your gums and teeth meet. Gently move the brush in a circular motion using short, gentle strokes. To clean the inside surfaces of the upper-and-lower front teeth, hold the brush vertically. Make several gentle strokes over each tooth and its surrounding gum tissue.
* Spend at least three minutes brushing.
* Floss properly - Gently insert floss between teeth using a back-and-forth motion. Do not force the floss or snap it into place. Curve the floss into a C-shape against one tooth and then the other.

10. Keep your lungs smoke-free! Smoking ages the heart and lungs. Quitting reverses the damage, giving lungs new life.
11. Laugh--several times a day! A good dose of laughter helps keep the immune system healthy.

From his small town near the Swiss border, a visiting dentist arrived in DC to see how our doctors provide fine dentistry in the nation's capital.

Okay, for most of us regular people, life as we know it has nothing to do with the prestigious "Fashion Week" held in Paris every spring.
But, still we can chuckle over the "unsettling sight...during designer Stella McCartney's show that the models stalking down the runway were actually smiling."
Reported by Laura Barton, in the London newspaper, The Guardian, this occurrence is remarkable because "...the smile is of course a highly unusual sight in fashion." The better to engender the arrogance of elitism? Or to exude an air of sophistication?
Haughty images aside, in these dark, global economic times, Barton proposes that "a little more smiling is precisely what we need. Isn't it time someone...launched a campaign to turn that frown upside down?"

Men Need/Want a Great Smile, Too!

"A young, healthy smile now is part of good grooming." So says Dr. Daniel J Deutsch, at the Washington Center for Dentistry, about the increasing number of men who seek out esthetic dental services in his practice.

"It used to be that women patients talked about cosmetic concerns when it came to their teeth," he says. "But now more and more men ask about keeping up their looks with bleaching, veneers and bonding."

Dr. Deutsch explains that many of his male patients are noticing how a colleague's improved smile provides important currency in the world of business.

And that business environment has changed. Men no longer can expect to work for one employer in their lifetime. And today's lay-offs and company closings are forcing middle-aged men to compete for jobs with their younger counterparts, making appearance a desirable factor in the work place.

"It used to be that men waved off the notion of the smallest appearance-related treatment," says Dr. Deutsch. "Now, they're calling up and scheduling to have it all done at once."

Early Visits to the Dentist Shape Us as Patients

We recently greeted a new patient with our usual: a warm welcome, a tour of the office and an offer of a bottle of cool spring water. But, this visit was anything but routine for the 29-year-old education administrator.

And so it was surprising to note that the otherwise sophisticated and cool professional seemed clearly uncomfortable in our office. We later learned that a bad experience as a young girl had made her deathly afraid of the dentist.

"This is a typical instance where a trauma at the dentist early in life can shape the kind of dental patient you will be as an adult," says Dr. Annie Yu, at the Washington Center for Dentistry. "Stating he intended only to "check" on a very loose tooth in her mouth, the dentist instead yanked hard. The tooth was not ready to come out. Trauma resulted for the then little girl patient who had placed a lot of innocant trust in the only dental professional she knew."

The patient now is dealing with a complex problem: anxiety about dentistry and dental problems stemming from neglect from anxiety about dentistry. "Sometimes these traumas leave deep scars," says Dr. Yu. "So we try to ease them back into a dental comfort zone and stable health."

Dr. Yu's approach includes making shorter appointments that are easier to tolerate and nitrous oxide and oral premedication that help ease anxiety. "All of these strategies help the patient experience a new reality in the dentist's office that is not threatening and much more comfortable," Dr Yu says. "These things really work."

The internet is an amazing source of information--even when it comes to how patients feel about our office.
I was trolling on the site called "yelp.com," and found some reviews written about our office and our Dr. Marc Doctors. Talk about amazing comments! And talk about extensive detail. It's wonderful to be appreciated exactly as we hope to be appreciated. Here's a sampling of some comments--in the patient's own words:
"(Dr. Doctors) is so funny and sweet, and is also very talented. He listens to killer music while he works on you, too."... Electric Toothbrushes Up the Wattage of Your Pearly Whites!

Here's the latest word when it comes to toothbrushes: Go for power! Whether run by battery or electricity, these auto-brushes come in a wide variety: Some pulse. Some rotate. Some pulse and rotate. And some vibrate at "sonic" speed.

No matter the version--dentists and dental hygienists tout the effectiveness of an electric-powered toothbrush. And get the one with a small round head. Brushes with large heads don't easily reach into small areas--like the backs of rear molars.

"You need to get bristles--which mimic the curved shape of the gum tissue around each tooth--to run right along that arcing line," says Soosan Mehrani, our hygienist at the Washington Center for Dentistry. "And the mechanical action works as an exercise machine for your gums, keeping them pink, tight--just like they should be!"

And so it's no surprise that dental professionals observe that motorized models are less technique-sensitive. "How often are we tired before bed and fail to give our all to proper brushing," Soosan says. "This often leads to food building up in certain areas, causing inflammation and problems."

So the answer is an electric model that pulses and rotates in a consistent way--no matter how tired we are. We get a solid, competent brushing every time, even in the back of the back of our mouth. And our smile stays healthy the electric way! And may the force be with you!

Today's Job Applicants Add Teeth to Their Appearance Checklist

These have been challenging times for Annette S.--who recently joined the ranks of unemployed attorneys in Washington, DC--and soon after joined the ranks of people with a brand new smile!

"I was out on the job market for the first time in years, and the first thing I thought was 'I need a better smile,' " says the mother of two young boys. "I need everything going for me when I feel like competition is so fierce."

Annette searched online, and chose our office after viewing the before-and-after photos on our website. "The photos showed real people getting good looking smiles," says Annette, who explains that it was so important to get a natural look that would be right for her.

Contractors and political organizers are not the only workers spiffing up things around here for the big inaugural doings next week. It appears many people have been spiffing up other things for the new regime as well: Their smiles.

"Call it inaugural fever, but one patient who has been thinking about improving his smile for along time, was so excited about our new president coming to town that he decided now is the time to look his best for all the parties and celebrations he's going to," says Dr. Sherman H. Telis, of the Washington Center for Dentistry, a practice located just a few blocks from The White House.

Here's the rundown on the new smile:
* Our technician conducted a Britesmile whitening session to lighten all existing teeth.
* Our periodontist, Dr. Madjid Matin, reshaped the gum tissue around the front teeth to provide a graceful new smile line.

Cosmetic Dentistry story highlights our patients!

Check us out in December's Washingtonian magazine to read an interview with our Dr. Peter Rinaldi, and see before-and-after photos of our own happy patients.

"With smile makeovers, I'm looking at the whole unit--all the teeth, not a single tooth," says Dr. Rinaldi, in the expansive 20-page spread that covers cosmetic dentistry from whitening to bonding to Invisalign braces to veneers.

The comprehensive article, "Get a Great Smile," presents Rinaldi's approach to smile design--in his own words: "Eye and skin color, lips, bite, smile, how you talk--it all interrelates," says Dr. Rinaldi. "This is an art form, like good plastic surgery."

Also prominently displayed are before-and-after photos of our patients--proudly showing off their new smiles. "People said, 'Did you have your hair done? You look refreshed,' " says Marti Lazear, who sports eight new veneers to correct teeth that shifted after wearing braces as a young girl. "I think it's from smiling more!" We aren't surprised, but we're so proud that one of our doctors was recently appointed as mentor and senior instructor at a distinguished teaching institution in the field of advanced cosmetic dentistry.

The California Center for Advanced Dental Studies (CCADS) announced last week that Dr. Rinaldi has been invited to join the team of educators who contribute their time to instruct other doctors seeking assistance or mentoring in the field of cosmetic dentistry.

"What distinguishes our mentors is their comprehension and use of advanced clinical protocols for veneers...and their overall commitment to excellence in their own dental practices," said Garrett Caldwell, president of CCAD. Dr. Caldwell noted that Dr. Rinaldi's selection is the result of a rigorous evaluation and review of the doctor's education, dental practice and overall integrity.

Something has changed since the presidential election. Can you hear the sigh of relief? The country is moving on and people are taking action--even when it comes to their teeth.

"I'm calling for a consult to talk about whitening and veneers." "I'm calling to set up that long-overdue hygiene and check-up visit." This is what we're hearing every day, as our appointment schedule is filling up fast.

The urgency reflects not only a concern with maintaining health, but with maintaining appearance. Our patients seem to be focusing on the basics.

"Politics and Teeth" - When it comes to the campaign trail, smiles do count!

Veneers, crowns, implants, bleaching, Invisalign--all have been on the agenda for our patients--of all political stripes--who have been deep in the fray of presidential politics. And it's been exciting to do our part in improving and maintaining camera-ready smiles for national TV, campaign rallies and fundraisers.
"One of the benefits of being in Washington, DC is that we see many news people, congressmen, consultants, party big-wigs, activists who apparently see the value of a good smile in politics," says Dr. Daniel J. Deutsch, of the Washington Center for Dentistry, in Washington, DC.
Dr. Deutsch wasn't naming names, but he noted that it was "fun" to turn on the TV every night and see patients who are newsmen and pundits show up on CNN and MSNBC with their good-looking smiles.
Dr. Marc Doctors, also of the Washington Center, said he was surprised that people took time during the campaign to come in for what ever it took to look their best--from routine check-ups to upper-and-lower veneers.
"Having on-air appeal definitely includes your teeth," he said.
And as the long campaign season draws to a close, one political pundit noted that whitening his teeth was a must before he hit the campaign trail. "Nowadays, it's the person with the 'needy' smile that is the exception," he said. "You want to be at the top of the list of producers calling for people to comment on events going on. Every one knows that means more than giving great analysis. You have to look good while you're giving it."

The Lure of a Beautiful Smile Reigns Even in Uncertain Times

Patrice A. came in a few weeks ago determined to upgrade her smile. And even when the recent up-and-down stock market days forced a few hasty delays--four rescheduled appointments!--the 42-year-old financial planner finally got the new smile she always wanted.

Bonding Happiness on the Adriatic Sea!

I just returned from a vacation to the islands that dot the shoreline of the country of Croatia. Known as the "Dalmatian Coast," this part of the world boasts heavenly turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea.

And by happy coincidence, I had already met one of our tour guides three years ago on another trip! A handsome young man in his 30s, he loves to help travelers discover new places and appreciate the cultures of other people. I was happy to be reunited with him. And as I complimented him on how wonderful he looked, I suddenly realized that his smile looked different--and terrific.

And just as that thought occurred to me--as if reading my mind--he excitedly shared his news: "Can you see the difference since you last saw me?" he asked. "I had bonding done on my front teeth. I used to try to hide my smile, and this has changed my life. I'm smiling all the time now."

That's when I recalled that his front teeth used to be dark, and some were also chipped. Now they were lighter, straighter--and much more handsome! It's amazing how a little bonding can mean so much. It surely did the trick for his smile--and for his new happier state of mind!

Who would have guessed just a few years ago that we would be carrying on practically real-time conversations--over the internet--with patients from England and Kuwait?

People are trolling all over cyber space for info about veneers, Invisalign, implants, whitening, gum lifts. They are informed dental consumers--constantly on the look out for updated knowledge to help them make good choices for treatment. And with today's business travel going more global than ever--patients are totally comfortable coming for appointments on a stopover in the Nation's Capital. Turning Back the Clock

Time was when the "Face Lift" was the iconic symbol of the ultimate makeover. Having skin redraped and tucked around the face was the ideal antidote for the aging face. But now, "Rejuvenation Dentistry" is just as commonplace. In fact, many patients arrive at our office determined to upgrade their smile--as "Step No. 1" on the journey to a newer, younger self.

"No matter how youthful my skin looks, I know I can't look younger if my smile still looks old!" said a patient recently on the day she received her 10 new veneers. "As a matter of fact, I think that a younger, healthier smile--by itself--can do more for an aging face than just a face lift."

Is the Internet Any Place to Find a Dentist?

It's no longer surprising that hundreds of people every year become our new patients after finding us on the internet. Every one searches for every thing nowadays.

As expected many are new to the area,and they are looking for a new dental practice--usually a place near their work. But you might be surprised to hear that many are not new to Washington and they already have a dentist--one they actually still like!

"Hi" I'm thinking about having veneers done," they say. "My dentist is a nice guy. But I don't feel comfortable having him do this kind of work. I just don't think he does much of it."

We hear this quite a lot. And who can blame them? Cosmetic dentistry not only is a big step for some of us, but it also can be a big financial investment. This conflict reinforces how difficult it can be for patients to choose the right place, and the right doctor. I advise these patients to do two things:
1.Visit different dental offices on the web, look at before and after photos--of actual patients treated in that office (some doctors buy stock photos).
2.Try to make an appointment to pay an on-site visit to meet the doctor, and hear what he/she has to say about your case.

These steps reveal the doctor's level of experience and also (and this is important) whether the doctor has "good taste in teeth." In the end, there needs to be an intuitive feeling of comfort--that this doctor will understand and provide the correct result.

"I Want a Whiter Smile!"

...That's what many patients say they dream about. And that's what many patients ask for when they call us for the first time. And who can blame them? Who doesn't like a nice, clean, bright smile?

Just the other day, a 61-year-old medical doctor left our office with a spring in his step and a brighter smile on his face. And all it took was one hour under the patented blue light of our Britesmile lamp. Do those so-called "Invisible" braces really work? That's the most-asked question about the tooth-straightening treatment known as "Invisalign." And, we are delighted to report that our patients have gotten amazing results with the clear plastic trays or aligners that no one can see!

Popular treatment. We know because we have done hundreds of cases, more than most other dental practices in the region. That means patients of all ages--from 20s to 60s, and up!

Invisalign is a wonderful, adult-friendly way to straighten a smile. Our patients report that wearing the custom-made trays is an extremely easy way to realign teeth--without anyone knowing! A new tray is worn every two or three weeks. These are wonderful advantages, especially since the majority of adult Invisalign patients--also wore metal braces as teenagers. Yes, most Invisalign patients are lapsed orthodontia patients.

Men Go Big for Cosmetic Dentistry

Happy Day. It just so happened during a recent afternoon in our office that three men were getting the final delivery of beautiful, pearlescent crowns and veneers on their front teeth. This is a happy day for our patients, because they walk out with a brand new smile. That often means a big change in how they look.

Men want to look young. Yet, since they happened to be all men, in one afternoon, it was hard not to note how times have changed when it comes to cosmetic dentistry. Women are not the only ones taking advantage of appearance-related procedures. Men want a younger look,too.

Photos told the story. "I started to notice that I was looking older in photos, that my teeth looked kind of crooked and brown," said a 48-year-old financial analyst, who never dreamed he would be interested in cosmetics. "I know my smile used to look pretty good, not like this. And I didn't like it, especially since there are a lot of younger guys in my office."

That's all changed now--after a session under a Britesmile bleaching light, four porcelain crowns and four porcelain veneers.

Bye-Bye Diet Soda
By now, every one has heard of the mind-blowing fact a can of Coca Cola contains the equivalent of 10 cubes of sugar! That's why so many of us righteously drink diet sodas or other non-sugar beverages to play it safe and keep our teeth free from decay. Well, it appears we are not as safe as we thought. Now we are being told to avoid all diet sodas and other sugar-free drinks. How can that be? Our doctors explain that recent studies show that sugar is not the only bad ingredient in soft drinks. An equally Big Culprit--in all drinks--is the acid used to enhance flavor. Sometimes called "phosphoric acid," this nasty additive does a job on our white teeth--eating away our precious outer-most layer called the enamel.

What Does It Mean?
That means we drink flavored water, Diet Coke, Diet Snapple, Fresca--you name it--at our dental peril. Our teeth are at risk of losing their pearlescent, white, glowing look. A thinner enamel begins to make teeth look yellowed, thinner, duller. Yuk. Who wants that?

We Sound Great on the Air Waves!

We all had a lot of fun recently when a reporter walked into our office to tape an interview for National Public Radio. Microphone in hand, Allison Aubrey poked her head into treatment rooms, chatted with patients and spent a lot of time finding out about the mechanics of smile design.

A newcomer to the world of cosmetic dentistry, she was fascinated to learn about little known factors that can cause a smile to look older. For example: Every decade over the age of 30, we show a millimeter less of our front teeth! Skin around the lips loses elasticity. Gravity does the rest. The result is a smile showing more bottom teeth than top teeth. And so it was no surprise to the reporter to be chatting with a patient who was that very day getting beautiful, all-porcelain veneers - to make her top teeth appear longer, and make her smile younger! Needless to say there were "smiles" all around as she showed off her new look.

Welcome to the first-ever Blog at the Washington Center for Dentistry. Whether you're an existing patient or someone stopping by for a short "Cyber Visit," we're happy to have you!

In fact, an amazing number of new patients choose our office after searching all over the internet. Many already have a dentist, but decide to make a new dental home here with us. And we're fortunate that once they arrive, first-time patients say they are happily surprised that we are what we look like on the Web.

We admit that we see them chuckling to themselves when we offer to take them on a "tour" of our beautiful new office. But we can see that they appreciate it when we take the time to show them around, especially when we recite our main mission: "To keep teeth healthy, beautiful - and young - for a lifetime!"
